Untitled (Sewn) explores ideas of seeking shelter and belonging by sewing through layers of simple line drawings on tracing paper. In sewing these drawings together, the individuals are at once separate yet joined. The transparency of the paper serves to highlight the tension between the gathering and isolation present in these works.
Paradoxically, the act of sewing both weakens the paper as well as strengthens it. Piercing the already fragile paper with a needle is a risky and somewhat violent act that serves as reminder of the intensely physical insistence of humans to carve, or will, a place for themselves into being. The needle and its danger, though, make way for the thread which acts as a binding agent, securing the pieces together both literally and conceptually, providing safety and guaranteeing the individual piece’s place in the larger composition.
