In the autumn of 2024, Stephanie Imbeau undertook an artist residency and presented an exhibition at Kunstverein Meißen. During this period, she engaged deeply with the legacy of Meissen porcelain, conducting research in the archives of the Meissen Porcelain Foundation with their generous support. Imbeau was particularly drawn to the meticulous depictions of flowing fabrics and drapery found throughout centuries of porcelain production. These visual motifs became the foundation for her Refoldings series, which isolates and reinterprets sections of fabric folds documented during her exploration of the Foundation’s historic works depot.

Imbeau approached this research through an intuitive, sensorial process, allowing herself to be guided by visual impulse and material resonance. By selecting and reconfiguring specific drapes and folds, she constructed a new visual lexicon—one that honors the historical intricacy of the original works while remaining open to contemporary interpretation and future dialogue.

As part of her process, Imbeau later investigated the provenance of the original sculptures, connecting her contemporary reinterpretations to the historical narratives embedded within them. This act of disassembling and recontextualizing mirrors her broader artistic inquiry into how individuals shape and reshape spaces of security, identity, and belonging over time.
